Welcome to Fredericton Today!

Hello, and welcome to the wiki site of Fredericton Today!
With a multicultural population, well-established academic presence, capital city status, burgeoning information technology sector, historic downtown area, and vibrant cultural life, Fredericton exudes vitality. And every year, Frederictonians welcome not only visitors from abroad, but also considerably large contingents of international university students. The purpose of Fredericton Today! is twofold. First, it serves as an educational demonstration/presentation site for ESL teachers looking for ways to connect their students to the communities where they live. Second, it shows how to accomplish this using a wiki, the simplest collaborative electronic platform that can do the job.
My name is Jack Watson, and I've been using wikis for the last four years to facilitate ESL student exploration of and involvement in the community of Fredericton. I use a wiki to provide individual students with private pages where they can complete journal assignments, and groups of students with project pages where they can plan research, develop presentations, and record their results. Along with a design model and rationale for wiki use in an ESL classroom, this site houses a number of example projects and journals donated by their authors, the students.
For a rationale of wiki use, read Doing More With Less: Wikis for Peer Editing and Community Contact, here in .pdf and available through EdITlib.
